Data Migration in AWS

Updated 14 June 2017

Guidelines for Data migration.

For better concern and hassle free migration one should follow the following guidelines:

1. Plan capacity: One need to find out the load on his site and should plan his instance accordingly in AWS
Run Test: Use dummy program of your platform to decide whether the extension is working fine in AWS if now what is the remedy
AWS application discovery service ease up the process for testing their associated dependencies, and their performance profile.
3. Determine Data: How much data can move how far how fast? For a best case scenario use this
Number of Days = (Total Bytes)/(Megabits per second X 125 X 1000 X Network Use X 60 seconds X 60 minutes X 24 hours)

Well everything seems fine, How do I get started?

Check which category you fit in weather A/B from the following

A.Less than 10Mbps –>Less than 500GB–> Unmanaged
B.More than 10Mbps –>More than 500GB–> Managed

For small scale transfer (Unmanaged) use the following tools to move your data to AWS server

  •  rsync. Its an open source tool along with 3rd party file system tools to copy data directly into S3 buckets.
  • S3 command line interface. Use the Amazon S3 CLI to write commands to move data straight into S3 buckets.
  • Glacier command line interface. Customers use the Amazon Glacier CLI to move data into Glacier vaults.

For Large scale transfer (managed) use the following tools to move your data to AWS server

An optimized or replacement Internet connection to:
Connect directly into an AWS regional datacenter AWS Direct Connect
Migrate petabytes of data in batches to the cloud AWS Import/Export Snowball
Migrate exabytes of data in batches to the cloud AWS Snowmobile
Migrate recurring jobs with incremental changes over long distances Amazon S3 Transfer Acceleration
A friendly interface directly into S3 to:
Cache data locally in a hybrid model (for performance reasons) Gateways (AWS or Partner)
Migrate petabytes of data in batches, and apply on-board storage and compute capabilities AWS Snowball Edge
Push backups or archives to the cloud with minimal disruption Technology Partnerships
Collect and ingest multiple streaming data sources Amazon Kinesis Firehos
